imagine the band

As a youngster I made up the same mixtape several times, with several permutations trying to estimate what the 'final' Beatles LP may have been using the best bits from McCartney's solo debut, Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album and George Harrisons All Things Must Pass.

It would have been a corker, for sure.

Knowing also that Lennon/McCartney compositions post-64ish were pretty much written by the individual authors then pasted together or slightly embellished by one or the other, Never Get Out of The Boat favourite and erstwhile acquaintance Go Home Productions has done a decent approximation of what Lennon's Imagine piano riffs and McCartney's Band on the Run words would have produced.

Good to see GHP back after what's been too long an absence...

Also congrats to GHP for helping Weiden Kennedy Amsterdam pick up a Bronze Lion at Cannes, by providing the audio edit with this Heineken film.

smells like rockin' robin

Firm fave, Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions is back with a new EP.

'Rockin' in San Francisco' contains three new tracks, including 'Smells Like Rockin' Robin', an outrageous Nirvana/Jackson 5 combination.
Ludicrous conceptually but somehow really works.

hey drooper! take out the trash

Awesome piece of silliness from Never Get Out of the Boat's favourite mash up genius Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions.

Heavily featuring the Dickies '79 punk-pop classic cover of the 'Theme from Banana Splits' it's a virtual 7inch single on Yellow vinyl, cut up and pasted up with numerous other samples (most notably a Rod Stewart cameo. Mark describes it as 'created under the influence of The Jamms / KLF / Coldcut / Steinski.'

Mark also has his new album out on 22nd July, titled "The Future, The Past & The Present Tension" it will be available as a free download form the main Go Home Productions site.

Go Home Productions does Nike 'Ignite'

The audio/mix for this new Nike football spot was created by my mate Mark aka Go Home Productions.

The spot, featuring Arsenal v Man United, was first aired in Japan the other day during the Australia v Japan world cup qualifier.

Mark is a big Arsenal fan and has cleverly multi tracked himself chanting 'we've got Cesc Fabregas' into the crowd sections.

Go Home Productions retrospective

Arguably one of the finest exponents of the art of mash-up/bootleg/bastard pop - Go Home Productions - has released a 20 track retrospective 'cd' compiliation this week. "This Was Pop (2002-2007)" A 5 year bootleg retrospective.
GHP has delivered some of the most celebrated examples of the mash-up genre over the last few years including the Madonna/SexPistols fusion 'Ray of Gob' and 'Rapture Riders', the Blondie/Doors hybrid.

The mash-up phenomenon exploded around 2001/2 as bedroom mixers, enabled by the democratisation of music production allowed by software such as Acid, Ableton and later garageband fused acapella tracks with the instrumental tracks of other records to create new 'remixes’. 'Stroke of Genius' was probably the biggest of the time and that spawned an MTV slot with the video mash-ups to compliment the tracks and Mash-up club nights like ‘Bastard’.

GHP’s retrospective is a pretty decent introduction if anyone’s missed out.

GHP is also a pretty interesting case study in a couple of the basic ideas of the new marketing.

I'm thinking about, the power of free, permission and the product is the marketing.
By giving away the tracks for free via his website and mash-up community blogs like GYBO and Boomselection (early example of the long tail of distribution..?) GHP has build a fanbase and mailing list, with permission to contact the list when there’s new tracks uploaded.
With this comes reputation and with that comes dj bookings, ‘legit’ remix work etc.
From fiddling in the shed to official remixes for Bob Dylan and David Bowie is quite a ride.

Of course, it helps that his work is shit-hot. As an art form that is by nature ‘user-generated’ there are thousands of wannabe mash-up artists making pretty average at best, shoddy at worst mixes, but GHP’s ‘Purple Cow’ is the vast musical knowledge from years of fandom which allows him to introduce the little extra elements into his tracks that the less detail focussed would miss. In ‘Rock in Black’ - the Queen and AC-DC blend – the little addition of Freddie’s ‘..get on your bikes and ride’ line is that knowing final piece of polishing that gives it the extra 5% .

Anyway, the tracks are here.
